Google talk will be VOIP (Gizmo / VIing et al) compatible

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

Well Google’s done it’s PR job and Google Talk has even made front page here in the UK, but something you might not know which is FAR cooler and much more important is that they are developing a link to Voice over IP services such as Gizmo, VIing using the SIP protocol so all the ’softphones’ will talk to Google Talk. So you’ll be able to talk to other services and phones via Google Talk, for free.

Find out more here at ZDnet.

When Google is going to support VOIP then you know that it’s shifted from a buggy implementations of Gizmo (yes it really IS buggy, can’t launch v1.0 at the moment) and Skype to Google Talk supporting VOIP is a gigantic leap forward, if only in the Apple-gets-podcasting-iTunes kind of way. The difference to podcasting is that the quality isn’t totally there yet with Gizmo et al; so Google’s interest in this is welcome to me rather than the big guys taking their ball back.

Just a note – you can at the moment call or leave me voicemail on Gizmo at ‘radioclash’ or over VOIP/SIP at 1-747-611-3777, and Skype via ‘timbearcub’. Can’t wait for the day you can podcast, play music, get voicemail, accept calls and record all of this and talk to the rest of the world via your computer…

EDIT: Still can’t login to Google Talk – it works via iChat and Jabber but not via XP and the Google Talk program. So much for the technology…and Gizmo is working now. Weird.

My username on Google Talk / Gmail is ‘timbearcub’ so feel free to add me. At least I’ll be able to chat, if I’m on the Mac…

Party like it’s 1996…

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Remember the heady days of the web, with web page counters, Java that would crash your browser and/or OS, ‘under contruction’, obscure VRML plugins that never worked and dancing animated gifs?

This great article sent me straight back to 1996 with its gallery of web abuse, and some wise words for current day we design also (lest we forget and all).

And yes Eyeblaster is EVIL (and I’ve had to whore myself out and work on those too, I feel so dirty…)

Radio Clash 41: Phone Homo

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

My telephone gets remixed, an Uber-mashup, a listener make some surburban noise, ambient gangsters drive-by and ending on a lovely strange rapture.

Engage aural drive at full warp here (35Mb, 60mins): http://www.realityengine.co.uk/radioclash/show-archive/rc_show41.mp3

Pitchfork mashup article

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Really good mashup article from Pitchfork from a self-confessed mash-fan, William Bowers.

Nice to see a new mashup artist like Aggro1 get name checked, some good mentioned in there (I must play that Eve boot sometime soon, it’s one of my faves too) and interesting he’s touched on very briefly the queer/gender-fuck side of mashups as an aside. Yes they are disposable but there is an element of playing with the norms, and that can include sexuality and gender (I’m thinking of John Oswald ptch shifting Dolly Parton here…). Would love to hear him talk about that more (drinks and wanky NYTimes style hyperbole or no ;-)

Radio Clash featured on the BBC!

Friday, August 12th, 2005

At last my life-long dream to be on the Beeb is fulfilled! Well on the BBC website anyway…Latest BBC Collective article features Radio Clash as one of their favourites, along with my favourites also Podcheck and WFMU.

EDIT: oops it’s Podshow (not one of my faves), not Podcheck. It’s still my favourite tho. So there. Go visit it. NOW. And make it more popular than that stoopid PodShit or whatever it’s called.
