American Edit gets Cease and Desist after only 10 days

Wow – it’s not a good time for poor ol’ Dean Gray and the amazing Greenday American Edit remix album – got a response, all good apart from Warners serving a Cease and Desist on the album – the site has been pulled, but there are already murmurs about another (Dean) Gray Tuesday – certainly this is better than the Dangermouse LP and deserves to be heard.

Even the Grey Album (EMI) and Kleptones Night at a Hiphopera (Sony / Disney) didn’t get a response that quick.

If you poke around you’ll find it, I suggest you burn copies for friends, share, torrent, put online. The album is pure talent and it deserves to be out there.

Surprised Warners are so touchy, given that other Greenday mashups seem to have the unnofficial nod, if only from the band themselves.

UPDATE: Boing Boing have picked up the story, amongst others.
UPDATE #2: Looks like Dean Gray Tuesday is shaping up to be December 13th. Put it in your diaries folks :-D 50 sites signed up so far, they need more mirrors so consider signing up if you have the bandwidth/space – more the merrier – or in this case, stronger.
UPDATE #3: This was down to a piracy consulting firm doing this on behalf of Warners according to Partyben’s site. Yes and they and their site does look creepy…Also you can help even if you’re not hosting by seeding this torrent on December 13th (I’m sure they’ll be many more – and if you’re hosting I’m sure you can get the tracks from it). See, no excuse? :-D

http://www.cyberparodies.com/ – a lovely little who parody called “i’ve been sharing files”… seems appropriate all things considered…

how can non-tech savvy folks help out with this cause? (as i’m not sure i even have a clue what a torrent is…)

the american edit actually inspired me to pick up a copy of american idiot, which i had been avoiding as it seemed too much like jumping on the old bandwagon to say you had the new green day album…

Well install a bittorrent client like ABC http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/ or BitTorrent http://www.bittorrent.com/ or Azureus I’ve heard good things about http://azureus.sourceforge.net/).

To seed a link you need to be downloading it – so click on the torrent link (or links) above on Dec 13th and leave it going as long as you can – when it’s fully downloaded you’ll be seeding the torrent for other people.

Torrent works by people downloading off you while you’re downloading, so if you leave it up for as long as possible more people can download it off you. Obviously don’t do this at work or places you could get in trouble for using bittorrent, some places ban it entirely despite there being legitimate uses – like OpenOffice 2.0 I got via bittorrent – a lot of official sites are switching or thinking of as it saves their download costs.

If you’re a bit more savvy – goto the http://gray.alt.fm/ Dean Gray Tuesday site and register your site and upload the files to your server, and post the links for 24 hours on your blog or website.

  1. [...] Rumor has it that Party Ben and Team9’s American Edit Green Day mash-up project got the cease-and-desist smack down from Warner after only 7 days online. No worries, though. It appears to be alive and well on BitTorrent. [...]
