Cee Lo says ‘Fuck You’, internet goes crazy

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Cee Lo’s single is an unsurprisingly pop-tastic gem from the new album that I blogged about a while back, apart from one teensy little detail- with typical Cee Lo contraryness and lack of interest for being mainstream I doubt you’ll be hearing it on the radio as it’s called ‘Fuck You’ and with the chorus going ‘And I’m like, Fuck you, ooo ooo ooo …Fuck you and fuck her too’ and the great line rhyming Ferrari with Atari ‘I guess he’s an X-Box and I’m more Atari, but the way you play the game ain’t fair’. And the rest of the lyrics are equally as invective – but over the catchiest tune this side of Nothin’ on you or Shutterbugg.

EDIT: According to Cee-Lo’s official site and YouTube the single is going to drop on October 4th, so the album The Lady Killer must be around then (previous estimates were a summer release).

Still the internets are rightly going viral on it’s ass right now…and rightly so, fuck yeah. (via Jeb 50PoundNote)

Newport Ymerodraeth State of Mind – EMI and Fair Use

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

(current mirror of Newport State of Mind – try here if it gets pulled like the original)

Thanks EMI! If you hadn’t pulled this Jay-Z parody video I’d have never heard of it, just like you’ve never heard of the concepts of ‘cover’ ‘fair use’ ‘parody’ ‘humour’.

Sadly in the UK unlike the US, parody and fair use isn’t enshrined in law, so even a parody cover (it doesn’t sample any of the original track as far as I can hear) like this can get aggro and a DMCA from a humourless EMI (the publishing arm), whereas if this was created in the States there would be nothing they could do.

Anyway the track by Alex Warren and singer Terema Wainwright is genius especially the bits ‘Newport – access from the A402!’, rhyming hamster with rapstar, ‘Josie D’Arby is from Newport, yes we didn’t know either! Thank you Wikipedia!’ and ‘Bugger off Alicia, Shirley Bassey is our queen!’.

Of course the success has lead to responses, one from Goldie Lookin’ Chain alleging that they aren’t from Newport and doesn’t know what they are talking about (the performers are from Newport it seems, but the video director who wrote it is from London). I wonder if they’ll get pulled too?

Kleptones Shits & Giggles*

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Shits and Giggles is a new odds-and-ends compilation from The Kleptones, slightly surprising after the double-album blowout that was Uptime/Downtime, and while by it’s very intention it’s a mixed bag, there are several tracks of interest:

Saturday White – Elton John’s Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting has been pretty well mashed, but not with Billy Idol, and when the vocoder/autotune kicks in it’s ‘woo!’ (< that’s a technical term)

Kill -  I think this is one of the offcuts of the A Night at the Hip Hopera Queen mashup album from many years ago – shame it didn’t make the grade because after one listen I love this track, summing up the music industry in one handy resealable easy-to-carry song.

Psycho Dreams – only here because in part I’m WTF did he get THAT acapella (although I can partly guess, I had little success with that) but also a really rare Fleetwood Mac mashup.

Highly recommended is Unwanted Whisper which is a reversal of the more famous “Careless and the Dead” Bon Jovi vs George Michael mashup, which has been posted elsewhere but is well worth checking out as is the rest of the album which can be downloaded here.

Jesus Christ I got my swagger back by Retarded Cunt

I can imagine all the web nanny corporate firewall sphincters contracting as I type the name of this mashup artist Retarded Cunt but what the fuck – crazy, uncommercial, uncompromising, messy and silly name, crazy, uncommercial, uncompromising, messy and silly mashups. I like, a lot.

Sometimes the millions of radio-friendly perfectly musically pitched ‘Pop vs Pop’ productions aren’t the point – where’s the grit? The humour? The what the fuck attitude? I worry for a lot of the more recent mashup artists, the pop is less bastard and more brand-friendly. Harummph.

And gotta love something that will never be played on radio, probably cos of the name…as everyone worries about their ‘brand’ and corporate slightly radical posturing…wonderful. You’ll probably hate it, probably think it’s terrible (hey I agree it’s wrong – even probably someone’s idea of a joke alias – but wonderfully intentionally wonkily wrong – full of YOU CAN’T DO THAT moments, some that work, some that don’t) but silly sonic terrorism (as Vicki People Like Us says ‘avant retard’) gives me hope because that’s where this whole thing came from. Silly, messy, clashy, witty, WTF bootlegs. It’s what I fell in love with in the first place.

And anything that makes jaded-old ‘heard it’ me laugh nowadays is alright with me. KInd of like Girl Talk with better drugs and a sense of humour…

DOUBLE RAINBOWGASM!

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Care Bear Double Rainbow Stare! What does it mean? Woah…it’s so intense!

The original:

And the remix, which makes me love the internet even more, from the Autotune News peeps:

Actually I like the song even more, kind of sums up the awe in more than the slightly odd (surprised ‘shrooms weren’t involved, Paul Vasquez the ‘Yosemitebear Mountain Giant’ says no ) extreme style of the original, and quite wisely cut most of the sobbing. And moaning. Which although I really appreciate the fact that yes the world has amazing beauty and most people take it for granted, and that IS a bitchin’ rainbow, that bit was ever so slightly scary. More so if he wasn’t on anything…although he does partake of weed, so maybe it’s some sort of THC afterglow? ;-)

Even inspired an excellent and funny Muppet Mashup:

The Double Rainbow Connection (Remix) by gdelahaye

I find it quite sweet and life-affirming actually – especially when coupled with Pachelbel’s canon in a mashup style :-D Or even this 2001: A Double Rainbow Odyssey.
