Calling All Shipping – MV Soundhog is broadcasting on all frequencies for possibly the last time with Radio Soundhog 7 (but then again Ben Hayes like his mate Frenchbloke always says ‘never again’ then pops up on the starboard bow when you least expect it).

It’s a wonderful and in some parts jaw-dropping hour-long mix, if you’ve tuned in before you’ll know what to expect, but if not you get funky 60′s grooves, modern electronica, 80′s tunes and rock all mixed like you’ve never heard before in one special transmission. Expecially amazing this time is the Renegades of Funk vs Human League section, and the Gang Of Four punk backed Mirror in the Bathroom going into manic drum and bass (has he been listening to DJ-C’s mix of ‘Mirror’?).

I hope he increases the frequency (hoho) of this sort of thing, if not long mixes like Radio Soundhog, then remixes or even *gasp* bootlegs or DJ gigs, basically he should stop moaning and get out there

And I love the Tempest quote it ends on, with Dr Who / Mr Wurzel Gummidge Jon Pertwee reading:

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp’d tow’rs, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

And is that Stephen Fry at the end? LOL.

Back back back in the mists of time, when men were men, women were women, and Dsico still made bootlegs, there was a messageboard called GYBO. Still is in fact. Now the girls and boys in mid 2003 on said messageboard had an idea – what about getting together and doing a charity mashup album inspired by and for War Child and their recently released Hope album.

That compilation begat London Booted, which begat Parkspliced, which begat the whole mashup compilation phenomenon, I’m willing to bet. It included a few tracks that went on to have a life after the album – Loo & Placido’s groundbreaking ‘Safari Love’ was for the album, as was GHP’s ‘Let the music gimme shelter’, Fondue Meltdown doing their classic Daft Punk vs Beats International bootleg and indeed the aforementioned Dsico contributed an excellent Jennifer Lopez vs Ladytron bootleg ‘ghetto pr0n queen’ which I suspect was one of his last A vs B bootlegs before going all glitch, then ditching bootlegs altogether and declaring them dead. Repeatedly.

The rest of the list is veritably star studded with early-mashup names – Frenchbloke (with and without Son), Ultra396, Poj, Boomselection’s DJ Spec, DJ Crook Air, Cropstar, Miss Frenchie, Bitter Sound Foundation, and some you might not remember such as Steve JH Christ who is dead (yet was resurrected probably 3 days later as Steve SPR aka Steve Supercollider – for fun ask him to show you the video ), Seej, Hepcat and Counter Corporation, amongst others.

Here is said album via Mediafire (162Mb) for the first time in probably 6 years in it’s full 2 CD set with original artwork(s) or failing that (and only if it doesn’t work) then try the direct link here which should never change (warning: any hammering of my server or mass sharing of the direct link and I will take it down again!). The original download asked you to donate to Warchild, I leave that to your conscience!

Phil Retrospector’s much awaited ‘Introversion’ mashup album is now out – expect ambient film scores, spoken word, spookiness, 3am moments and quiet reflection in dark modern rooms.

A few of the tracks come from the excellent David Lynch compilation ‘Mashed In Plastic’ but recommended is Bluebird Blackout mashing Harry Dean Stanton with Muse, All Angels and Bob Dylan, Song to the Sigur mixing Sigur Ros with This Mortal Coil, Sleepwalking for Hours mixing Lauri Anderson, Morcheeba and Ligeti with Philip Glass and A Thousand Secrets where Leonard Cohen’s spoken word meets Muse again and Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares.

But really pretty much the whole album with only 1 or 2 slightly niggly exceptions is quality stuff.

I mentioned on Twitter that I was planning a follow-up to these shows, and without even mentioning that the idea was around the theme of first, dorkland aka Walton (Viera?) in Second Life suggested I do a show on the first mashups that got people hooked on them. I did so on Twitter, Get Your Bootleg On forum and this blog and had an amazing response…so amazing that the show has had to be edited down and some of the responses dropped – but I still have 27 amazing tracks which are all classics and part of bootleg/mashup history (and a few were surprises even for me).

Still ended up over 2 hours though! Very much worth it, because it is a 2 hour 20 long mix of some of the most influential and classic bootlegs of all time.

As I said this is part 1 of a series, the next one as it always happens was playlisted first and already included a few mashups and cutups that were mentioned for this show, so those tracks and shouts will be in the next part.

Thanks to all who responded what their first mashup they heard (or wanted to hear) was!

But you know that we’ve changed so much since then, oh yeah (2 hours 20, 110Mb)

I dunno, Lily Allen mashups are like buses, turn your head for a minute and 2 come at once and whizz past the bus stop.

I missed these first time (uh, like 2 weeks? YEARS in blog land) but the first is by the excellent ThriftshopXL – I raved about the last Lily video he did with the Cure, and now Lilyest Hobo (please no dog jokes) which got the thumbs up from the label and b3ta and loads of other places. In fact it had pervaded my consciousness that something callled the Lilyest Hobo was out there, but never clicked on the link..If I’d seen TXL next to it I would have immediately because he’s always quality.

And the next is a surprise – me liking a Darkness mashup! I know, Lily now Darkness, what is Tim coming to? Anyway mixed with the wonderful Buraka Son Sistema by the french bootlegger Elocnep (one to watch, kids!) and from Foolklegs II – which if it’s anything as good as the first one is well worth downloading as I just have. I’ll let you know.
