Despite the weird and cruel nature of the universe atm (look at my twitter or Livejournal if you need to know) I’ve been taking comfort listening to People Like Us’s Do or DIY end of show compilation ‘Awful Fun’ available over at WFMU. Some crazy collages and manic avant-retard action, my fave bit so far is Spike Jones going into Mistabishi via what I think is a V/V/M sick-music style version of Funkytown (?), and then a brief cutup about Goodman and Buchanan getting arrested (presumably over copyright LOL).

ultimateAnother freebie I’m wading through atm is Ultimate! Ultimate! Ultimate! by DJ Superix which is a mix made of the 160 songs of the legendary Ultimate Breaks and Beats series…nothing to shout about numbers wise compared to say Akira the Don, and slow starting, but when it gets properly going half way through CD1 with the funky tunes you don’t know you know, it certainly has the retro ‘OMG that’s where it’s from’ and ‘OMG I remember that sampled by X’ recognition factor, as well as the classic ur-grooves that still work 20-30+ years later. Includes longer sections of great classics like JB’s Payback and Lowell Fulsom’s Tramp. One for sampling hiphopheads, definitely.

If you hate your printer…(Mistabishi Printer Jam vs Office Space)

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Then this video might give you some laughs, or revenge. This is a video mashup/cutup I’ve done using the excellent and highly recommended Mistabishi and his insanely genius Printer Jam track, mixing in the original video at the start, but 64.6343% more Office Space, 13.45322% more cats and 14.4357% more insane YouTube people beating up printers, office equipment or other people.

I hope he nor Hospital Records mind, I really recommend you go buy ‘Drop’ the album it’s on, it’s already one of my favourite CDs of 2009 mixing dubstep, liquid and jumpup drum and bass, Burial-style ambience, and even uptempo rave/old skool dnb piano numbers. Highly recommended.

If the above wanky new open source FLV player doesn’t work for you (you can even embed this on your own sites – feel free!) then I’ve also uploaded it to Vimeo (BOO! to YouTube and Fox who nixed it immediately cos Fox won’t allow Office Space to be uploaded there) and you can download it below:

320×240 MP4 (should be iPod friendly)
640×480 H264 MOV (should be DJ friendly ;-)

Duellin’ DJ Yoda does Dirty Pickin Damage!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

DJ Yoda should be well known to long time listeners of Radio Clash (and anyone into cutups, mashup history, turntablism or music generally), and if not, why not? Actually don’t answer that…

041djyoda Anyway as part of the Data Transmission podcast he’s created a great Cut and Paste Country & Western mix mix, mixing country, blues and hiphop – sounds like an odd combination? Not really – from Wyclef’s dubplate with Kenny Rogers, to the like of Gangstagrass and millions of mashups the country/hop hybrid has been well done. Even I’ve DJ’d a few of the tracks in this mix as part of the country sets I did in Second Life.

But here are some greats – Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire goes urban, Littlest Hobo and Duellin Banjo drops, and Dolly Parton…need you want anything more?

And yes there is Country AND Western ;-)

Incredible Eclectic Method live video

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Watch and learn all your DVD-player bothering VJs – THIS is how it is done (1st one NSFW audio):

Eclectic Method – Jonny Living Room Jam from Eclectic Method on Vimeo. (via AudioPornCentral)

Eclectic Method have been doing this for years like Hexstatic, and are kings of the live mashup video mix, IMO. And one of the best of the cutup crowd – cos they do far more than VJing.

And to see them doing their thing, watch this video…love the U2 drops, a reference to Emergency Broadcast Network perhaps? Reminds me of some of their ZOO-TV work, or the EBN theme anyways (there are loads of EBN videos available at that link or Josh Pearson’s site also highly recommended!).

Kutiman remixing YouTube

Friday, March 6th, 2009

When I talk about someone remixing YouTube you’ll probably roll your eyes and say ‘I’ve seen that before.’ – well maybe not like this.

Kutiman takes all the acapellas, demos, gear tests, people showing off their skills which there are millions of in YouTube – and a bit like the Napster Nuggets aka Mic In Tracks of old, makes a new track from them:

An amazing mix, and apparently there is an album of these but it’s been nuked by the attention – hope it comes back soon, I really dig this video and would love to see it and the others in hi-res – but it seems quite a few of them have already made it on to YouTube.

Intro:

More like this 4:20 tune (check out the white rasta :-) :

And proof you can go all dnb on our asses with stuff like this:
