RC 225: Babylondon 2012

Welcome to Gridlock! They call it murder…

A state of the capital address about London, 2012, Babylon and ting. Righteous music from roots reggae to dubstep, soul, rock and gothabilly & psychobilly (and two Orchestras  and  some funky dubby jaxz from Miles Davis!) celebrating Jamaica’s 50th birthday and Red, Gold and Green rather than Bronze, Gold and Silver.

“The man who worships silver and gold, shall surely, surely, surely lose his own soul, Then fade away”. (and a track I forgot to play on this podcast! Bless you Junior Byles).

I don’t play enough Jamaican music so inspired by David Rodigan here is a dubtastic podcast.

RC 224: GYBO RIP Part One – The New Skool

Sadly as mentioned on the blog Get Your Bootleg On – the 10 year old mashup forum is to close – certainly the bootleg forums are now gone. Here’s the first part of commemorative shows (sounds like a Franklin Plate: here buy the 2002 Mashup Edition with Extra Goldleaf Missy!) where I’ve taken the first 5-6 pages of GYBO and featured the tracks there – just to show the creativity and diversity of the place. And to give GYBO a sort of wake.

What I thought might be difficult to find good stuff I eventually had the opposite problem – too many good mashups! This also harks back to the first Radio Clash podcasts back in 2004-6 which were originally an all mashup.

As mentioned in the show I need your help for part 2 – which will be the ‘Old Skool’ edition. What was the first mashup you heard on GYBO? Or the favourite one you’ve heard in these 10 years? Usual address, or try the contact form above or the comments below.

Nothin’ Crazy – except selling my mashups

I guess my mashup being on Amazon (oh and iTunes too) would be something to brag about – if I’d put it there, and of course the original artists were being compensated, and it wasn’t someone else claiming it as their production also.

So DJ Crazy J Rodriguez please stand up for your online perp walk – selling my Nothin’ Crazy (Gnarls Barkley vs B.O.B ft Bruno Mars) for 89 cents as part of your ‘Summer Break’ album is not big, not clever and insulting as I post all of my mashups for free as I don’t own the copyright and never intend to make money from content I don’t own. Usual disclaimer is I do them for fun and not profit, with all parts credited and much love (and hopefully some extra sales/promotion) given to the original artists. Apparently there are many other mashups ‘stolen’ and sold there also from the likes of DJ ZEBRA, Fissunix, DJ Schmolli, Wax Audio, DJ Earworm, DJ Lobsterdust and Dan Mei…very naughty.

So save yourself some money and download Nothin’ Crazy for free here.

DJ Schmolli ‘Get It Away Bitch’ gets the Instamatic treatment

DJ Schmolli ran a competition for the best video for his new Red Hot Chilli Peppers vs Prodigy vs Bob Marley track – and I won! Here is the result launched today…hope you enjoy. Had some fun with grain and film plugins as the source material for the Prodigy was low quality, and using various videos of the tracks sampled in the Prodigy track (rather than the original video which doesn’t fit and I’d used before in my video for Enya vs Prodigy) – so we have cameos by Randy Weston and his bongo player, Kool Keith, RATM and a totally unrelated visitation by Ofra Haza…

I think the revolutionary atmosphere in Egypt also had some bearing on the choices, too…all those flags (all of my videos have what posh people call ‘visual motifs’ – for Correspondence for example it was the circle, this one is the flag).

Hope you enjoy!

Word on the street is DJ Schmolli is releasing his CLXXIV EP tomorrow on AudioPornCentral…from what I’ve heard it sounds ace :-D
