New mashup – Instamatic – Stalker Fever (Fever Ray vs Aphrodite)

Monday, March 1st, 2010

The mashup cupboard emptying and Aphrodite-luvvin’ continues, this time with Instamatic on the mix (could just as well be a DJNoNo release but it’s more on the serious side; the quote at the start from one of my favourite films Garden State about family changes was rather spookily prophetic – this track was finished in July last year!)…anyway this takes Fever Ray’s excellent ‘When I Grow Up’ and makes it share a bunk bed with Aphrodite’s jungle classic ‘Stalker’.

Like some of my mashup vids I sometimes make mashups or longmixes with a feeling or specific intention to be about something – this was definitely about me having to empty my room at home the year previous – and became prophetic about the thoughts around my mother’s death and then going on to emptying her house as well. I don’t think we really appreciate those things and places til they’re gone.

Why did I hang on to it so long? Dunno, I rarely release stuff anymore…I still create mashups but have felt really apathetic about releasing them (ditto with podcasts, bar the making bit!). I think the inevitable criticism or attention wears heavy on me, as I’ve said before I make them for me, this is music as I’d like to hear it, or makes me laugh. If anyone else likes it it’s a bonus…but I’d be lying if external opinion had no bearing which tends to lead to apathy or being wary about letting others hear it, as a really negative review can make me disown ‘my children’ for years (see Stone Cold Roses for that one). It’s also why if you dig around the Wimpy player on the Artists site sometimes you might get the odd unreleased ’surprise’ ;-)

DJNoNo mashup – Those Were the Drums (Mary Hopkin vs Aphrodite)

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

DJNoNo’s frankly quite worrying love affair with Aphrodite (not as dodgy as his obsession with Julie Andrews, the stalking court hearing is in a few weeks) continues with this ode to the Asylum ‘Those Were the Drums’ mashing Mary Hopkin’s 1968 classic ‘Those Were the Days’ with ‘London Massive’ by Aphrodite – and craftily sneaking in some Osymyso talking about Bastard at the Asylum for Swiss TV all those years ago…

This was played back in November at the 72 night, not got around to posting that and the other tunes I did until now…rest will follow hopefully :-D

Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas drum and bass style!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The only time of the year I can trot this one out so I may as well work it (the rest of the year it lurks in the corner, gollum style sulking that it only gets the chance to shine for a few days a year)…this is ‘SCarey Xmas’ – Mariah Carey’s perennial ‘All I Want For Christmas’ given a right royal kicking by DJNoNo and Friends (those friends – in the Twitter ‘I don’t really know you’ sense – being Dillinja and Unknown Error, who actually make far more of a contribution than the estimable DoctorNoNo as he is also now called mWAHAHAHA!)

Also available for you festive-fiends, all one of you, is the video for Voicedude’s ‘It’s the Little Things’ the wonderfully strange combination of Blink 182 and BTrans Siberian Orchestraw, hich not only has recently made it onto A Very Bootie Xmas 2 but also his latest (?) Chrismash compilation which I can’t find the link for sadly – I note a re-pitched updated version…which isn’t this one. The video is Box of Delights which I might crack out again and watch. It’s one of my favourite books and TV series of all time.

One, two, three, count! The Count Rides Again – Mashed and Slashed Halloween EP!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

cover

Those of you that remember Bride of Monster Mash and the County Sound track DJNoNo did, well The Count Rides Again, and this time he’s moved to Jamaica and is Count MC wid some dancehall riddim in ‘Batty Dub’ (with Ftatateeta and the Bats).

Mashed and Slashed EP includes spooktastic tracks from Scott Cairo, LeeDM101, CjR, Marc johnce, Clivester, Voicedude and Zee Bearoness so it’s definitely worth a listen. Really recommend CjR’s opener using Fog vs EBTG, Clivester’s camp emo genre-bending take on Rocky Horror’s “Sweet Transvestite’, Zee Bearoness (who dey?) using Vincent Price’s spoken word vs toy piano molester Twink to incredibly spooky effect and Voicedude’s Reggaeton meets More Cowbell band Blue Oyster Cult.

Happy Halloween! WoooOOOOooOOooh!!!!

pinky ring disco polka

Proud to say there are not one but TWO Disco Accordion bootlegs in the world – after the first DJNoNo’s Just Lose the Accordions with Eminem from many years back (with a little bit of Myron’s Circus Polka too), there is Pomdeter’s Pinky Ring Disco Polka which puts the Myron Floren cheesetastic Disco Polka classic with Wu-Tang’s ‘Pinky Ring’ – yay MOAR ACCORDIONZ! More the merrier I say…I’d suggest a Polka album but I’m not good at organising those and anyway Polka even in Disco form, is marmite dancefloor death ;-) And like ‘Just Lose the Accordions’ before it, it’s being played on Pennsylvania Polka Radio – how many people can say they’ve done that? Huh? :-D

Pomdeter is well worth checking out, as well as organising ‘72′ and creating some interesting mashups he’s obviously got a love of accordions which is alright with DJNoNo ;-D And any friend of DJNoNo is a friend of mine *call the therapist, nurse!*
