New mashup – Instamatic – Stalker Fever (Fever Ray vs Aphrodite)

Monday, March 1st, 2010

The mashup cupboard emptying and Aphrodite-luvvin’ continues, this time with Instamatic on the mix (could just as well be a DJNoNo release but it’s more on the serious side; the quote at the start from one of my favourite films Garden State about family changes was rather spookily prophetic – this track was finished in July last year!)…anyway this takes Fever Ray’s excellent ‘When I Grow Up’ and makes it share a bunk bed with Aphrodite’s jungle classic ‘Stalker’.

Like some of my mashup vids I sometimes make mashups or longmixes with a feeling or specific intention to be about something – this was definitely about me having to empty my room at home the year previous – and became prophetic about the thoughts around my mother’s death and then going on to emptying her house as well. I don’t think we really appreciate those things and places til they’re gone.

Instamatic – Stalker Fever (Fever Ray vs Aphrodite)

Why did I hang on to it so long? Dunno, I rarely release stuff anymore…I still create mashups but have felt really apathetic about releasing them (ditto with podcasts, bar the making bit!). I think the inevitable criticism or attention wears heavy on me, as I’ve said before I make them for me, this is music as I’d like to hear it, or makes me laugh. If anyone else likes it it’s a bonus…but I’d be lying if external opinion had no bearing which tends to lead to apathy or being wary about letting others hear it, as a really negative review can make me disown ‘my children’ for years (see Stone Cold Roses for that one). It’s also why if you dig around the Wimpy player on the Artists site sometimes you might get the odd unreleased ’surprise’ ;-)

Nasty Chewing Girls (Vanity 6 vs Annie) – new Instamatic mashup

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

In 2010 I’m planning to release the backlog of mashups that got to the sort-of-finished stage and I left due to apathy re: making the covers, mastering (how I HATE mastering – the 7″ version of this took 3 tries!) etc.

So here’s the first, a mashup idea that unusually came from someone else – namely Jeb 50PoundNote who asked why isn’t there a Nasty Girls vs Chewing Gum mashup in existence? A very good question indeed, and here’s the answer:

nastychewinggirls

This comes in two flavours, the ‘7″ Juicy Fruit’ mix and the ‘12″ Bubblicious Genius mix’ – not edits actually totally different mashups, second one I did first as I didn’t have the Chewing Gum instrumental (it’s on the flip side of the 7″) so I used the Headman Dub and Mix, but then Gavin Reborn Identity kindly provided it to me so hence the other version. The DJ version is of course faster, about 126bpm if memory serves, and as Chewing Gum is seriously influenced by Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love I added a bit of my favourite intro to that song and little bits scattered throughout.

Big thanks to Jeb, Gav and Thomas who apparently couldn’t stop dancing along (that is praise indeed :-D )

Nasty Chewing Girls (7″ Juicy Fruit mix – Vanity 6 ‘Nasty Girls’ vs Annie ‘Chewing Gum’)

Nasty Chewing Girls (12″ Bubblicious Genius mix – Vanity 6 ‘Nasty Girls’ (That’ll Work remix) vs Annie ‘Chewing Gum’ (Headman Dub & mix) & Tom Tom Club – Genius of Love (extended))

UPDATE: Annie Strand herself (if it is her official account) tweeted about this mash! Woohoo! Thanks :-D Glad you like it.

White Witch Dub used in great dark space dub mix…

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

It’s rare to hear what happens to your mashups or remixes when you release them; like children they have a life of their own but when they go, they leave for good, they never call, they never write, they never pop round for Xmas to say hello….;-)

So it’s nice when you hear something good which uses a mashup o’ mine – and here is a case in point, a random Mixcloud search revealed someone had used an Instamatic track in a dub/dubstep mix – namely White Witch Dub (Dubmatic version) (my track is 52mins in towards the end – but I recommend the whole mix so far). Thanks dreadbot – love the mix! I like the mixing he did with my track too…really made it dubbier, spacier…even mixed in some melodica in from another song! Cool…

And the whole mix starting with a clip from 2001 is ALWAYS a good’un in my book, esp for a dark spacey dub mix…

EDIT! 18 videos, 7 minutes – Ian Fondue’s classic gets a video from me

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

EDIT! 18 videos in under 7 minutes from Tim Baker on Vimeo.

Ian Fondue’s legendary mashup gets a video from Instamatic (ie, me!) 18 videos in 7 minutes, in a tribute to those 80’s edit videos, Max Headroom and the like…it’s got blipverts and internal references/in jokes in it, a la Alan Moore. Blink and you’ll miss them!

Tried also to show that most videos are essentially the same, and what may seem random is in fact rather ordered.

Big thanks goes to Ian Fondue for such a great mashup – a staple of my sets, my Mashup of the Year (2008?) and long-deserving a decent video. I hope y’all enjoy.

Features:

Bodyrox ft Luciana – Yeah Yeah
Obie Trice – Got Some Teeth
Dr Dre – Forgot About Dre
No Doubt – Hella Good
Justin Timberlake – Sexy Back
D12 – Purple Pills
Lady Sovereign – Love Me or Hate Me
Missy Eliott – Work It
Black Eye Peas – My Humps
Dizzee Rascal – Stand up Tall
KRS1 – Sound of the Police
Reel2Reel – I like to Move It
Kylie – Slow
Kelis – Milkshake
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five -  The Message
Madison Avenue – Don’t Call me Baby
Diana Ross – Upside Down
J-kwon – Tipsy

And a few other stealth bits ;-)

Now also at other good outlets: YouTube (who is on Ultra Records? It got Content ID’d by them, thankfully still there although blocked in some countries, grr) and Myspace so there is NO excuse if you are Vimeo-phobic.

You can also download an iPod-friendly file here or it’s in the feed so if you’re subscribed you might have it already. (It’s a .m4v file, which is basically a .mp4 that Apple strangely decided to invent it’s own suffix for – beats me. If you have probs try Quicktime/iTunes or renaming the suffix to .mp4 and playing in a far better player such as VLC).

Know Your History part 3: Parkspliced Blur remix project

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

pspliced_A_cover

The final part of this journey down bootleg history lane is probably the biggest project, covering all tracks from Blur’s legendary Parklife album, A-sides and B-sides in 2 CD set to honour it’s 10 year anniversary of release.

Conceived by McSleazy and helped out by RadioQuita then from Strangely Familiar and created as with London Booted from the people on Get Your Bootleg On messageboard, it came out a few months after the aforesaid Clash album and again was popular with many blogs.

This one didn’t get an physical release so probably in some ways is rarer, but there are some real gems on there. The star-studded international assortment of bootleg & mashup DJ names you’ll probably recognise (or should seeing what they went onto) that contribute tracks are Loo & Placido, Lenlow (Bootie Boston), Go Home Productions, McSleazy, Pojmasta and JoolsMF (both also the people behind DJ Hero creating most of those mixes), DJ Payroll, Gameover, Dunproofin, Mixomatosis, FakeID aka Lionel Vinyl/Geek Chic Soundsystem, DJ Tripp and Josh Console aka cry on my console (Pirate Soundsystem/again DJ Hero) and many more.

My tracks? Well I still stand by my b-side ‘Golden Beard‘ by my alter-ego ‘timbearcub’ – later just ‘tbc’ the world’s worst DJ name – as one of my best ever, Slowdive meets Nina Simone and only 3.4 seconds of Blur’s frankly terrible jazz-wankathon ‘Beard’. ‘Godlife‘ – well I love the intro, but really the Acapella of Doom although being in key (I checked, both are Eminor Dm or something) claimed another victim. It’s those evil Beach Boys harmonies…goes in to the ‘not bad, could do better folder’ really.

I’ve included both artworks (the ones shown here are by myself, the bumper cars/whippet) and an interview done by theconfidential with all the people involved and RadioQuita.

Girls who are boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they’re girls who do girls like they’re boys can download the zip file via Mediafire here (164Mb) or failing that (and only if it doesn’t work) then try the direct link here which should never change (warning: any hammering of my server or sharing of the direct link and I will take it down again!).
