The theme is there is no theme mashup roundup (Lady Gaga mashed, new Kleptones track)

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Can’t think of a clever thematic linking device apart from there is no mention of the World Cup or football in this po….DOH! Have an unrelated yet topical Chris Brown MAD cartoon mashup instead…

I should be so getting sick of Lady Gaga mashups by now, but no not yet. I was getting ready to hate Pomatic’s Thieves Like Romance Lady Gaga vs New Order mashup (well so few people do New Order justice, much abused in the mash world but rarely bettered) and was surprised to find out that’s it’s a total POP CHOON (Ian Act of Dog and Jeb 50 Pound Note please report to the front desk! beep!) mashing Thieves Like Us and Bad Romance to great effect.

In fact it’s part of a whole album ‘The Fame Monster Mash Hitz’ (title could be slightly better, C- see me!) and it’s pretty good – nothing here crossing genres or experimental like the last post but with tunes like Just Summer – Bananarama vs Lady Gaga (Cruel Summer vs Just Dance) it’s less about cred envelope-pushing and just recognising a good dancefloor-friendly totally pop mashup – which I remind you is quite hard to pull off well especially pure A vs B. And these two do that well – good summer pop mashups.

Unwanted Whisper by The Kleptones

Kleptones are off to several festies this year
, including i_beta festival in the Netherlands and Glastonbury – and afore thee went they left us with a nice present, Unwanted Whisper a reversal mashup of their infamous Bootie track ‘Careless Or Dead’ – rather than using the George Michael instrumental this uses the acapella, and vice versa for the Jon Bon Jovi. Strange to hear this combo reversed, but it also works but in a less immediate way than Careless.

DJNoNo Skip to the End mix & Cuddle the Present, Scott & Jeb Podcasts

Friday, June 4th, 2010

And more of this re-release mania – back in May 2008 I appeared on Pete Juxtaposeur’s Skip to the End podcast as DJNoNo and created a 30minute mix specially.

Here’s the 320kbps separate version for your separate listening pleasure (although I heartily recommend listening to Skip to the End show I was on for chat and great music from Pete).

Also another mix I’m quite proud of is the Cuddle the Present mix I did for Jeb 50 Pound Note‘s podcast – that’s now back up after being unavailable for a few years and available here.

Also back up is the show I did with Jeb and Lee from I Motor Away and the first of the 3 shows Scott, Jeb and myself did. – the second is available here. Also the Xmas show I did with Scott and Jeb on Scott’s 30th birthday.

Oh and still one of the best podcasts I ever did – the Hijack Happy Birthday podcast me and Jeb did for Lee’s I Motor Away podcast is now up (it seems I Motor Away has podfaded and is not up anymore so I uploaded it for good on my server)

Phew! Did I really do all that?

EDIT: and now courtesy of Scott the 3rd podcast myself, Jeb and Scott did the Night Nurse Show ‘Podwhores’ – joined by Stefan is now up on my server. It is very very rude though in true Night Nurse Show tradition, be warned ;-)

Can you stay, for these days?

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

It’s 30 years since Ian Curtis died, so today Michael I’m mostly listening to Joy Division. Here have ‘These Days’ – b-side to Love Will Tear Us Apart and one of, if not the, last studio recordings Ian did, a mile or two (literally) from where I was born and grew up – although I’d just moved down south a few months earlier at that time.

Also vocal-less but really digging Incubation today, off the Komakino single:

R.I.P. Ian – listening to one track off the Komakino flexi I wonder if the next album would’ve been quite electronic. What might have been…although instead we got New Order, a much sunnier cousin to the darker JD, so not all bad, Here it is with some datamoshing (which is like the modern equivalent of my running VHS tape through backwards techniques at college; creating MPEG2 intentional encoding errors as transitions:

Want to hear more? Well check out Recycle, the New Order / Joy Division remasters project blog run by longtime friend of Radio Clash and myself Jeb £50 Note and friends.

Music Industry is Killing Music

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Great new video from Dan Bull ‘Home Taping is Killing Music’.

BTW the subject line comes from this graphic which I did for a Second Life t-shirt or an LJ avatar 3 years ago originally, it seems to have spread *ahem Jeb* so here you can have it at higher res ;-)

Nasty Chewing Girls (Vanity 6 vs Annie) – new Instamatic mashup

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

In 2010 I’m planning to release the backlog of mashups that got to the sort-of-finished stage and I left due to apathy re: making the covers, mastering (how I HATE mastering – the 7″ version of this took 3 tries!) etc.

So here’s the first, a mashup idea that unusually came from someone else – namely Jeb 50PoundNote who asked why isn’t there a Nasty Girls vs Chewing Gum mashup in existence? A very good question indeed, and here’s the answer:

nastychewinggirls

This comes in two flavours, the ’7″ Juicy Fruit’ mix and the ’12″ Bubblicious Genius mix’ – not edits actually totally different mashups, second one I did first as I didn’t have the Chewing Gum instrumental (it’s on the flip side of the 7″) so I used the Headman Dub and Mix, but then Gavin Reborn Identity kindly provided it to me so hence the other version. The DJ version is of course faster, about 126bpm if memory serves, and as Chewing Gum is seriously influenced by Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love I added a bit of my favourite intro to that song and little bits scattered throughout.

Big thanks to Jeb, Gav and Thomas who apparently couldn’t stop dancing along (that is praise indeed :-D )

Nasty Chewing Girls (7″ Juicy Fruit mix – Vanity 6 ‘Nasty Girls’ vs Annie ‘Chewing Gum’)

Nasty Chewing Girls (12″ Bubblicious Genius mix – Vanity 6 ‘Nasty Girls’ (That’ll Work remix) vs Annie ‘Chewing Gum’ (Headman Dub & mix) & Tom Tom Club – Genius of Love (extended))

UPDATE: Annie Strand herself (if it is her official account) tweeted about this mash! Woohoo! Thanks :-D Glad you like it.
