First up is Reborn Identity – if there was someone who OWNED 2009 with video mashing, it probably would be him for his work on Mashed in Plastic alone which is now a full DVD mashed movie!
So here’s his video for Qubic’s Fleurs Soutenues du Mal – Warning contains Sarah Brightman, but on the upside it does compare her to Medusa so fair do’s really. Excellent use of Jason and the Argonauts, a brilliant film. I think he is becoming the king of the filmic mashup!
DJ Le Clown I know more for his audio mashups, but love the use of Rocknrolla film and very film trailer buildup, and use of video effects. Video effects can come off looking tacky and bad, which is why I tend to stay clear of them (and the fact my machine is crap) but here the contrasty degraded xerox style effect with the outlines and red flashes really works. In fact the video works better than the audio…I’d have my Mashup Pedant Of the Year award wrestled from me by Lee Spoons if I didn’t mention the Prodigy chorus is a bit out of time…but with a video as fun as this it really doesn’t matter.
And this one from Cheekyboy works well despite my utter hatred of Will ‘Scientologist’ Smith; not totally sure the Franz lick works with Ting Tings 2/3rds in, but the rest is very good and I can see this moving bodies – and of course the video is great, especially the Only Fools and Horses reference!
Nice to see Phil Retrospector there for A Thousand Secrets, a video I’ve blogged here before – but missing is ThriftshopXL, who although I never liked that Nirvana/Astley video for several reasons (being in key is a start, although that’s not TXL’s fault!) he was the other person who owned 2009, mostly because of his wonderful Lily Allen and Bat for Lashes videos – and this (which I don’t know if it was made in 2009, certainly the Phil n Dog bootleg is a total classic from 2004 and a regular on Radio Clash, so nice that there is a video for it :
Finally I present to you ‘Fleetwood Mix’ – the Fleetwood Mac mashup album (it changed from an EP to a short LP in the last few hours, literally!) with tracks by DJ BC (current Bootie Top 10 Exclusive!), Celebrity Murder Party, LeeDM101, DJ FOX, RIAA, 10000 Spoons and myself, remixing the hits new and old in the 30+ year career of Fleetwood Mac. Musically the mashups and remixes range from glam rock, rap, house, dubstep, children’s records and ambient!
I thought this would never see the day, so it’s good to finally have it for you – you can download the tracks below or the full zip with larger artwork on Mediafire and failing that – and only if the link is down – you can download it direct from my server. Keep in mind though if you hammer/spread this link I will take it down again as it nearly nuked the server last time!
EDIT: I spruced up ‘Go Your Own Steinway’ which is basically a new version (new intro and speech samples, better production etc.) and uploaded it on the 22nd October, and remastered ‘White Witch Dub’ – so you might want to redownload these Also you can still get the later ‘Dubmatic’ version of White Witch Dub over at the Instamatic site or see the video here.
As well as being released and played in part on XFM, 72 the collaborative mashup project will have a live mashup event in London on Thursday 29th October at Loom bar from 7pm-1am with many mashup DJs in a continuous moving mashup feast! Idea is like the old Bastard ‘Bring Yer Own Boots’ – each DJ brings 3 tracks but similar to 72, one track at a time, in order!
This means the night has a dream DJ list of many people picking just the best 3 tunes, which I think should provide great if chaotic results – totally in the spirit of Bastard! And like Bastard it won’t just be mashups, but I’m sure you’ll hear a few
I will be DJing (well putting on 3 tunes) as well as:
Osymyso
Freelance Hellraiser
LV15
Bush No.10
Jez Celebrity Murder Party
Joel 90
Ape
Lee Spoons
Cartelmike
Eddie Pedalo
Dsico
Pheripheral
Scott Cairo
Tizwarz
Gara Gara
and Pom Deter, who ran the 72 project with Eddie Pedalo.
I’m sure many more to be added! Should be a great night, it’s free so come on down, the mashup’s lovely! And it will be one of the few (read: only) events you will see me anywhere near DJ decks in the near future since I am officially retired
I mentioned on Twitter that I was planning a follow-up to these shows, and without even mentioning that the idea was around the theme of first, dorkland aka Walton (Viera?) in Second Life suggested I do a show on the first mashups that got people hooked on them. I did so on Twitter, Get Your Bootleg On forum and this blog and had an amazing response…so amazing that the show has had to be edited down and some of the responses dropped – but I still have 27 amazing tracks which are all classics and part of bootleg/mashup history (and a few were surprises even for me).
Still ended up over 2 hours though! Very much worth it, because it is a 2 hour 20 long mix of some of the most influential and classic bootlegs of all time.
As I said this is part 1 of a series, the next one as it always happens was playlisted first and already included a few mashups and cutups that were mentioned for this show, so those tracks and shouts will be in the next part.
Thanks to all who responded what their first mashup they heard (or wanted to hear) was!
Yes it’s finally here – 72, the pass-the-parcel mashup project, inspired by our very own Boot in 60 Seconds has reached 72 minutes and is thus finished!
This is basically what Girl Talk SHOULD sound like, done by people who actually understand mashups rather than spending more time on their haircut. Cue Girl Talk lovin’ haterz Bring it on! Anyway 72 has the same sort of 30 seconds-and-it’s-gone hyper-ritalin ADD and ‘remember this?’ nostalgia silliness and madness, but most of it by and large works far better than 99.999% of mixes in this genre.
Includes remixage from:
Lee Spoons, Instamatic (tis me!), World Famous Audio Hacker, Celebrity Murder Party, Eddie Pedalo, pomDeter, Irn Mnky, RadioFace, JamieCG74, GaraGara and MadMixMustang.
Each mashup artist had 72 hours to complete their section, and it features contributions by yours truly. Go give it love over at GYBO or download it here. Thanks to 10000 Spoons for hosting, Pomdeter for the idea and great artwork and Pom and Eddie Peddlecar for mix-wrangling and organising a great project!
