You might recall me mentioning GYBO Weekend Challenge, the ad-hoc for-fun mashup challenge where you have a weekend (no, never) to create a mashup using a pre-selected acapella and instrumental – and winner voted by the people of the board (usually other challengers) gets bragging rights and to select the next tunes to mash. Well not only is it on it’s 13th incarnation, like Fela Down the Chippy my track that won the first one, weekend before last I won against some tough competition with my exceedingly rough and ready and silly ‘Bollywood in Space’ using Babla Orchestra and the selected instrumental ‘Do You’ by Adam Freeland and some early space samples, with a sort of EBN/MBM inspiration (but not as good). I hope you like…not as polished as my usual, but fun

What I’m reallty proud of is for this weekend (just gone)’s challenge I got to choose the next tracks for the 13th GYBO challenge – Pet Shop Boys ‘Always on my Mind’ seems to have flummoxed them all apart from MP3J’s excellent mash:

and Pom’s Always Mine mash which works really well.

PomDeter – Always Mine by pomDeter

But the acapella was the perennial Thou Shalt Always Kill by Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – one of my favourite tracks and this seems to have caught the collective inspiration of GYBO. Firstly with this amazing track from Dunproofin – Just a Band probably my favourite so far, certainly those of you who like the Radio Clash theme music which is also by Andy will LOVE this:

Dunproofin – Just a Band

And LV15 does a rather litigious reading of it with a very current Bieber 800-type ambience, again brilliant although he might get threats from Strummer’s legal team

And this house tastic Justice vs Thou Shall Always Kill from Ian Fondue – love the just a band section when it kicks in:

IanFondue-JusticeForKilling(Demo) by imedit-gybo-challenge

And for a spacefunk MBM type vibe is FM24′s take on Thou Shalt Always Kill:

This is all making it very hard to know who to vote for. If I can vote being Queen Fingertrouble I’ll just wave then, and say let them eat Caek (is a lie!).

Shits and Giggles is a new odds-and-ends compilation from The Kleptones, slightly surprising after the double-album blowout that was Uptime/Downtime, and while by it’s very intention it’s a mixed bag, there are several tracks of interest:

Saturday White – Elton John’s Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting has been pretty well mashed, but not with Billy Idol, and when the vocoder/autotune kicks in it’s ‘woo!’ (< that’s a technical term)

Kill - I think this is one of the offcuts of the A Night at the Hip Hopera Queen mashup album from many years ago – shame it didn’t make the grade because after one listen I love this track, summing up the music industry in one handy resealable easy-to-carry song.

Psycho Dreams – only here because in part I’m WTF did he get THAT acapella (although I can partly guess, I had little success with that) but also a really rare Fleetwood Mac mashup.

Highly recommended is Unwanted Whisper which is a reversal of the more famous “Careless and the Dead” Bon Jovi vs George Michael mashup, which has been posted elsewhere but is well worth checking out as is the rest of the album which can be downloaded here.

* and eats shoots and leaves, probably

Howdy pardner! Here’s the latest Videotones mash, ‘Exit’ from the Kleptones Downtime album. Reborn Identity has given the mash given a spaghetti feel (hmm isn’t that actually gnocchi? )

Be prepared for a brooding, tense and downbeat Western epic facing down the barrel of a gun with Beck, John Mayall, Aesop Rock, Henry Fonda, Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson amongst many.

There seems to be a desert theme (rather than dessert, that would be silly) developing amongst the Downtime bootlegs, inspired by Reborn’s excellent Untired mash, also available at this very channel – watch this space for more dusty hot action!

This is what Reborn Identity said about this video mash:

“With “Exit”, The Kleptones take a bluesy song about returning home and inject it with all the tension of a Western showdown. The words “I’ll be way up in the sky” take on a gloomier, more fatalistic edge.

This video incorporates footage from “One Upon A Time In The West” (1968), “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964), “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly” (1966) and “Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid” (1973).”

BTW we’re still looking for contributors to turn the rest of the Uptime / Downtime album into video – so give us as shout or email Eric at eric@kleptones.com if you’re interested.

Name and Shame time: there’s a mashup thief called lvlvlv1 and also DJ White Knight about claiming false credit for making mashups and remixes inc my Go Your Own Steinway mashup.

This happens from time to time, sad and pathetic people try to enlarge their tiny e-Penis by stealing other people’s work and claiming it as their own. Yes I don’t own the rights either; but when all you have is credit for making a combination work it’s cheeky for someone to come and claim it as their own – especially when you’ve done all the work! Note this is exactly the same mashup, he’s not remade it, it’s the same production to my ears.
…
8)Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer & Andy Moor vs Motorcycle (Disco Trance Mashup)
9)Fleetwood Mac-Go Your Own Way lvlvlv1 (Trance Mix)
10)Ronski Speed & Gareth Emery vs Ferry Corsten, Super8 & Tab (Trance Mashup)
…

More galling – and the reason I’m calling him out on this, usually I ignore stuff like this – is the asserting that it’s trance. Its NOT TRANCE FFS. Fred Falke is not trance (french house), Fleetwood Mac is not trance (MOR rock), even Eric Prydz on a bad day is not trance (club house). Steal my mashups BUT NEVER EVER CALL THEM TRANCE, DICKWEED. I have never done, and will never do, a mashup or remix using trance. I hate trance.

So this lvlvlv1 = a complete tw*t, go make your own mashups and remixes, and stop nicking other people’s work. So now I’ve just splatted your name all over google as a talentless cock who plagiarised other people’s work (you really should enable comments), consider yourself slapped.

Thanks to pomDeter for the tip, he’s nicked one of his as well, and a few others possibly. And one of Martinn’s – see the comments for their take on this (I am not alone in having work stolen by this man).

And see the follow up post which should be linked below where he reported me for ‘hate speech’ for calling him talentless. Well if you have to steal other people’s work, then yes you have no talent.

EDIT: Restored to it’s former glory as surprise surprise, despite his futile ePenis threats and puppet accounts (see below) GoDaddy didn’t pull the plug despite his pathetic butthurt email. Maybe less of the dodge bleach job next time, lvlvlv1? It must be eating through to your brain.

Care Bear Double Rainbow Stare! What does it mean? Woah…it’s so intense!

The original:

And the remix, which makes me love the internet even more, from the Autotune News peeps:

Actually I like the song even more, kind of sums up the awe in more than the slightly odd (surprised ‘shrooms weren’t involved, Paul Vasquez the ‘Yosemitebear Mountain Giant’ says no ) extreme style of the original, and quite wisely cut most of the sobbing. And moaning. Which although I really appreciate the fact that yes the world has amazing beauty and most people take it for granted, and that IS a bitchin’ rainbow, that bit was ever so slightly scary. More so if he wasn’t on anything…although he does partake of weed, so maybe it’s some sort of THC afterglow?

Even inspired an excellent and funny Muppet Mashup:

The Double Rainbow Connection (Remix) by gdelahaye

I find it quite sweet and life-affirming actually – especially when coupled with Pachelbel’s canon in a mashup style Or even this 2001: A Double Rainbow Odyssey.

Don’t believe a lot of what you read here.

It’s just wrong. Maybe it has been edited by a few people to self promote; all respect to those people, but they arrived a bit later. Doesn’t it strike you as odd, when the page actually mentions GYBO and Boomselection started in 2001/2002 all the ‘notable’ dates are from 2004/5 on? So apparently we all sat on our hands for 2-3 years doing nothing? Probably posting lolcats and bitching about Weiser/IDC LOL.

I added the first mashup albums/compilations (Parkspliced, I Created A Monster, London Booted – some of the first to mash up a whole album) a while back and they’ve been removed. Why? Well probably cos the wikitrolls and wikimods use Google as a primary source. Extremely sad – but why you should NEVER use Wikipedia as a primary source. Ever. It has some rather glaring omissions/wrongness:

No Frenchbloke & Son? Esp in Bootleg Albums – no Haggis Trax (1999 apparently, not 2002! Played on JOHN PEEL FFS)

No Fondue Meltdown?

No Soundhog?

No Erol Alkan / Kurtis Rush?

No Strictly Kev? No DJ Food?

No Coldcut – they’re rather important re: mashups…Beats and Pieces was seminal as well as the KLF

Your Woman by Whitetown as good as it is, is NOT a mashup. It has no recognisable 2nd ‘B’ element?

No Cartel Communique – well Bastard is sort of mentioned…in passing, sad for this is the first ever mashup club, the one that influenced Bootie. So why is it passed over, with a small image credit?

Soulwax created Blue Monday vs Kylie – really? LOL (it was actually Erol Alkan as Kurtis Rush, Soulwax remade it)

No mention of how DJ Hero actually started at Bastard?

Never ever heard of Bonna Music, Good Copy Bad Copy (self promo?), WTF is Glee doing there?, White Panda – WHO?, Max Tannone – ditto, never heard of you, Tom Caruana – ??? and Clayton Counts should probably not be there either – the latter was just doing it as a stunt like his rather sick ‘death’. ‘Punkmash’ != mash.

Why is Girl Talk on there since he’s said he’s not a mashup artist?

Love you ToTom but why is there a separate section for your work and GHP and Freelance Hellraiser doesn’t? Or Soundhog or Frenchbloke or Fondue Meltdown or…

Ditto Legion of Doom – you’re a precursor cos you started doing mashups in 2004? Really? Err…

OTOH, nice to see Phil n’ Dog’s Doctor Pressure getting rather belated props…

As an aside, I heard from John that one of the editor of an influential 70′s gay rights magazine added it to Wikipedia cos it wasn’t there – to be deleted by some Wikitroll. Why? Well apparently it ‘didn’t have enough Google hits’. *facepalm*

Of course! If it isn’t on Google it doesn’t exist! I mean it’s not like there is a massive pre-history of the world that hasn’t been digitised yet…oh. And this is recent history that thinks mashups started in 2004/2005 – it’s far worse for say the history of Gay Rights and GLF. Distortion for personal gain of near and nearish history is very common.

Oh and response to those who’ll helpfully say: ‘why don’t you edit it then?’ – I did that for many years correcting the mistakes, they all get reverted back to wrong/self promo/recent stuff. So maybe you should have a go (enough people repeatedly doing it might get the message across). Go to it gang!

Other response might be: ‘who gives a fuck about history’ - well it’s a lucrative & powerful position to write it. Such gatekeepers get appearance fees, book deals and lazy journalists apply them with ‘expert’ status firming up their position and their ‘idea’ of history. It then gets written down as ‘the truth’ til many years later – if ever – someone actually bothers to question it, but by then the damage is done. But recent events have shown it’s worryingly about who shouts the loudest, who shouts longest, and public perception rather than any idea of truth (which I know is subjective, but to abandon any ideal of objective truth even if it is an impossible goal, but an important journey, is worrying).

And no I wasn’t adding Radio Clash – someone did that years ago and it stayed for a while*, ironically when I’d stopped playing purely mashups…more adding those who should be remembered and never were (part of the remit of Radio Clash and the mashup history series, it has to be said – must resurrect the Mashup History because otherwise this will be forgotten and people will think Glee invented mashups LOL).

*It then got removed as teh Wikitroll said apparently podcasts have nothing to do with mashups…okaaaay. Never reappeared on the podcasting page. Being one of the first (I lose count of whether I’m 2nd, 3rd or 4th – not bothered about the ranking, tbh) podcasts in the UK doesn’t count for much it seems

“Your Woman” by White Town

Excellent new videos as part of the Videotones Project creating videos for The Kleptones excellent Uptime/Downtime album.

First up is video artists Crumbs Chief with their Epic dance number of 1,000s for ‘Come Again’ – love the old skool film and various dance sequences in this, and the power to the people 60′s vibe (I assume via the film Across the Universe and archive footage).

Next Busta and Beasties in Mashup Germany‘s excellent video for Hella Touch – first HD vid for the project I think, and serious quality.

Kleptones are playing Glastonbury next weekend – lucky bastards – with as with Bootie London a VJ set with Butchauntie using some of the Videotones videos including my videos (most likely for Welcome Back, Mad Groove and Brightness and Contrast).

They’re topping and tailing the festival, playing on Thursday at 11.30pm : East Dance Tent, Dance Village (Silent Disco – 2hr AV set) and at Sunday 11pmon the Rabbit Hole Stage, The Park (Noisy Disco! – 90m AV set). If you’re one of the lucky kittens with a ticket check ‘em out.

So I (and several of the VT artists) can put on my CV that my videos will be shown at Glastonbury, including the premiere of my final draft version of ‘Brightness and Contrast’ video which I hope to release before they get back. Woo!

Can’t think of a clever thematic linking device apart from there is no mention of the World Cup or football in this po….DOH! Have an unrelated yet topical Chris Brown MAD cartoon mashup instead…

I should be so getting sick of Lady Gaga mashups by now, but no not yet. I was getting ready to hate Pomatic’s Thieves Like Romance Lady Gaga vs New Order mashup (well so few people do New Order justice, much abused in the mash world but rarely bettered) and was surprised to find out that’s it’s a total POP CHOON (Ian Act of Dog and Jeb 50 Pound Note please report to the front desk! beep!) mashing Thieves Like Us and Bad Romance to great effect.

In fact it’s part of a whole album ‘The Fame Monster Mash Hitz’ (title could be slightly better, C- see me!) and it’s pretty good – nothing here crossing genres or experimental like the last post but with tunes like Just Summer – Bananarama vs Lady Gaga (Cruel Summer vs Just Dance) it’s less about cred envelope-pushing and just recognising a good dancefloor-friendly totally pop mashup – which I remind you is quite hard to pull off well especially pure A vs B. And these two do that well – good summer pop mashups.

   Unwanted Whisper by The Kleptones

Kleptones are off to several festies this year, including i_beta festival in the Netherlands and Glastonbury – and afore thee went they left us with a nice present, Unwanted Whisper a reversal mashup of their infamous Bootie track ‘Careless Or Dead’ – rather than using the George Michael instrumental this uses the acapella, and vice versa for the Jon Bon Jovi. Strange to hear this combo reversed, but it also works but in a less immediate way than Careless.

Enya vs Prodigy – Apeboy (Lenlow edit – censored version) from Purple McFadden on Vimeo.

Amazed that the this hadn’t been properly videomashed – there are some rather odd ones out there (using another band’s video for starters – Tiamat’s video is the one used for MTV Mash, strangely!) and I thought this deserved the classic proper A vs B treatment since it’s a classic A vs B from way back (1999 originally). So here’s the Instamatic video for the Bastard/Bootie fave Enya – Orinoco Flow vs Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up originally by Apeboy and recreated and extended by Lenlow.

Of course given then nature of the original Prodigy video it’d not pass the ‘no nudity/sexual nudity’ guidelines for YouTube or Vimeo so ironically I can show the violence but not the sex…but you can see the uncensored version below from my site, even share/embed it. Of course it’s NSFW containing sex, violence, drug use and all kinds of fun stuff!

Hate to edit it for that but then I can’t put it on YT or Vimeo..silly. You kind of miss the point of the original Prodigy video too since that end reveal shows the protagonist naked thus makes it seem possibly more gratuitous. Grr.

At the top is the censored version if you’re squeamish about posting the first, still fairly adult (the Prodigy video is still pretty hardcore even with edits; it was banned on MTV so be warned) but shouldn’t be anything there you couldn’t show on UK evening TV, in fact a lot less probably and tame for most of the internets now.
