I mentioned on Twitter that I was planning a follow-up to these shows, and without even mentioning that the idea was around the theme of first, dorkland aka Walton (Viera?) in Second Life suggested I do a show on the first mashups that got people hooked on them. I did so on Twitter, Get Your Bootleg On forum and this blog and had an amazing response…so amazing that the show has had to be edited down and some of the responses dropped – but I still have 27 amazing tracks which are all classics and part of bootleg/mashup history (and a few were surprises even for me).
Still ended up over 2 hours though! Very much worth it, because it is a 2 hour 20 long mix of some of the most influential and classic bootlegs of all time.
As I said this is part 1 of a series, the next one as it always happens was playlisted first and already included a few mashups and cutups that were mentioned for this show, so those tracks and shouts will be in the next part.
Thanks to all who responded what their first mashup they heard (or wanted to hear) was!
Yes it’s 3 years I’ve been doing Radio Clash, and we celebrate with a Punky well Dancey Live Mashup Party at the Parkade in Second Life with international stupid-star DJ, DJNoNo Ulysses.
He played a mixture of old classics played in previous Radio Clash shows and new mashups, especially from the new Chemical Bros remix album(s) ‘Block Rockin Boots’ and featuring some of the best mashup artists around atm.
Not only has Mr Fab got a timely Summer bootleg compilation out called Beach Blanket Bootlegs(surely Beach Bootleg Babylon would be a better name?) with some very fine selections, from Who Boys, Pilchard, Partyben, Eve Massacre, Jet Set Alex et al, but then again I would as it includes my Godlife bootleg (Blur vs Beach Boys).
Well when I was DJing at Bootie in November there was a film crew running around filming Adrian and Mysterious D and the events as they unfolded…well finally an early cut of the video has been released and there’s an appearance from yours truly at the 1min mark DJing in the main room!
OK it’s blink and you’ll miss it, but it’s the first time I’ve been video’d while DJing
Also features Partyben and a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-them appearances from Eric Kleptone.
Wow – it’s not a good time for poor ol’ Dean Gray and the amazing Greenday American Edit remix album – got a response, all good apart from Warners serving a Cease and Desist on the album – the site has been pulled, but there are already murmurs about another (Dean) Gray Tuesday – certainly this is better than the Dangermouse LP and deserves to be heard.
Even the Grey Album (EMI) and Kleptones Night at a Hiphopera (Sony / Disney) didn’t get a response that quick.
If you poke around you’ll find it, I suggest you burn copies for friends, share, torrent, put online. The album is pure talent and it deserves to be out there.
Surprised Warners are so touchy, given that other Greenday mashups seem to have the unnofficial nod, if only from the band themselves.
UPDATE:Boing Boing have picked up the story, amongst others. UPDATE #2: Looks like Dean Gray Tuesday is shaping up to be December 13th. Put it in your diaries folks 50 sites signed up so far, they need more mirrors so consider signing up if you have the bandwidth/space – more the merrier – or in this case, stronger.
UPDATE #3: This was down to a piracy consulting firm doing this on behalf of Warners according to Partyben’s site. Yes and they and their site does look creepy…Also you can help even if you’re not hosting by seeding this torrent on December 13th (I’m sure they’ll be many more – and if you’re hosting I’m sure you can get the tracks from it). See, no excuse?
