My collage contains elements from Leandroid, superk8nyc, kumar303, and bertwerk via Creative Commons derivative works license off Flickr

Yes after 4 years in the wilderness, the Aural pOddities show is BACK! Aren’t you lucky…after the last very POP show this is as unpop as it gets, including the mad, bad, sad, and just plain irritating avant-retard latest in car-crash audio.

You’ll feel like you’ve been in an audio trainwreck and will rush to your Kylie CDs for relief after this, but it’s worth reminding yourselves there’s a strange world out there, and people make and made music and audio like this…and the stranger sadistic thing, I really enjoy it all

Note: not all tracks used in this are ‘unlistenable’ nor ‘crap’ – but they are mixed with a specially developed ‘Unbeliev-a-bull-crap-o-sonic’ technique so terribly with other tracks to make them so. So no offence intended – the most crap thing here is me after all

With thanks (blame?) to WFMU’s Beware of the Blog, 365 Days Project, Hotrod’s Run for Cover, Cool and Strange Music Magazine , Lux and Ivy’s Favorites and many more.

Like some cross-dressing mashup of Minty meets The Presets via Front242 and Depeche Mode (and a faint whiff of Jonny Slut’s band Atomizer or is that just me?) San Francisco’s Ejector are not only rubbered up and bear-friendly (and probably NSFW in this video, but whose work doesnt like greased up wrestlers and techno bears dancing in rubber?) but they seem to be creating an interesting mix of influences here…from the EBN/Cabs early 80′s cutup/terror style video to the style and music. Other tunes are a bit more camp and in your face Bowery style, or just pop – but I prefer the darker EBM sound of this one.

And to keep it on the track of mashups – just to show you the Depeche Mode influences (they also covered Photographic) bandmember Ricky Terry’s tune Deep is mashed here with Everything Counts, neatly colliding with my own current Depeche Mode mashup obsession

Whew what HASN’T happened since the last show? New US President -and he’s black. New back pains and colds for Tim – and he’s ill. A new hope, Episode III, ‘I have a good feeling about this’, but first where’s my money?

In this mix I included To Speak is a Sin, one of my coming out songs, as it is as I correctly guessed before Mr Tennant’s coming out, about a gay bar – takes me back to those times!

All of the tracks are my PSB faves – mostly B-sides and album tracks with some singles thrown in and mashups/remixes.

Of note are Go West – in there because of my memory in 2006 seeing the Pet Shop Boys at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and belting out the words along with all the men there doing the motions and raising the roof, an amazing moment.

And To Speak is a Sin – my coming out song, which ironically was Neil’s Coming out album, and it is about gay bars, the old sort like The Coleherne in London, which I really associate with that song…

The mashup by DJ Magnet – Love Comes Running Up That Hill Quickly has emotional resonance for me, and DJ Culture is about the first gulf war – all those satellite fantasies and wars we’ve (not) wom. And I think You Know Where You Went Wrong was the first bside of the first Pet Shop Boys 12″ I had. And I own Introspective on cassette somewhere and I Want A Dog along with the funny Always in my House are the favourite tracks from that, I like the same sort of irreverent approach to their own songs like Soft Cell did with Ecstatic dancing…

And the ending of Tall Thin Men was accidental – Amanda had problems with her feed so I did another song (forgetting to switch off the audio in SL at first, so at the start you’re hearing the song relayed sattelite-like through the server) and is an unused demo from Closer to Heaven. I love it because a) it refutes the gay stereotype of liking showtunes and b) rhyming Ute Lemper with temper. A showtunes song about hating showtunes? CLASS.

Once upon a time, there was a little powercut in San Francisco…

Why should I care you say?

Well seeing that one powercut can wipe out Livejournal, Second Life, Craigslist, Technorati, Typepad…the list goes on, you wonder why in this apparent age of Web 2.0 these systems are still susceptible to one fatal flaw – location. (actually just read up on the Technorati site and their site did have co-location but the generators went down).

So I’m supposed to set up virtual business and entrust more of my data to these people, in this shiny new world of online applications and environments? You know Google, GMail, LJ, SL et al…

Not until they all have backups, and alternate servers in other parts of the world, I won’t.

Ok for those of you getting the jitters from not being able to get onto LJ/SL et al, watch this:

Yes after 2 years Who Boys have a new mashup album out called The Good, The Bad and the Who Boys it’s a mixture of noise, drum and bass and downtempo doo wop, it seems to cover all bases – regular listeners to Radio Clash would’ve heard 4 of these tracks, all of which I heartily recommend (and now can finally post) -

Voodoo Molly (Little Richard cosies up to Musical Youth, they wisely get very scared)
Stayin’ A Firestarter (caused, well, fires* to start at San Francisco’s Bootie and the Who Boys Shunt gig. * Or something the kids say nowadays…)
Scarborough Clocks (Coldplay goes folderol?)
Friends Stuck in Chemicals (Gerry Rafferty and friends meet Gary Numan – I wonder what they talked about?)

Of the newer ones the downtempo ones are really floating my boat, see also San Fran Chopin, Strange Pyramid, the funny Who Boys Choral Society covers. For noisy dnb see Blue Betty and We Will Chop You (Aphrodite! WOOH!). Needless to say, as before you will hear some of these new tracks on upcoming Radio Clash shows.

Don’t forget, if you haven’t already check out the show where they invaded Radio Clash despite UN sanctions and international furore…you might then understand more of the creative chaos that is Who Boys. Or will you?

New mashups and a new host site – remember http://mutantpop.multiply.com/ although I’ll post here whenever I post something big up, it’ll be good to check that too. Currently there are a few of the boots I played at Bootie in San Francisco:

Push it Slut (French Avenue 2006) – An older boot from 2004 given a sparkly new treatment and basically redone from the ground up, adding Kraftwerk’s Tour de France to the existing mix of Avenue D’s ‘Do you Think I’m a Slut?’ and Salt n’ Pepa’s classic ‘Push It’

Alison She’s So Horsey - sort of floating around for a while, this is an excercise in taking the piss out of Ms Alison’s ‘Ride a White Horse’ which like a lot of Goldfrapp wears it’s influences not only on it’s sleeve but pretty much has stolen the whole wardrobe! So I mixed it with Laidback ‘White Horse’ and a spoof of that called Disco Horse

Ghetto Tits 2006 – another remake and a companion to Push it Slut, this is Benassi’s remix of Outkast’s Ghetto Musick mixed with various Peaches tracks, with added Scissor Sisters ‘Tits on the Radio’ and Salt n Pepa and a touch of Kraftwerk again for good measure. That’s if your measure is slightly tilting and vibrating from the bass, that is.

LFO Can’t Turn Around – a bit of a cheat this one, it’s been released in the R-House mix before but never seperately, this mixes LFO ‘LFO’ with Farley Jackmaster Funk’s house classic ‘Love Can’t Turn Around’ and I’m rather fond of it.

Download them all here

The 2nd of the Radio Clash nights at the Arts Theatre Club will be on Wednesday December 13th and I hope you can join us from 9pm – late for the

Xmas Xscape Pod (or Hectic Eclectic 2) with

Eric Kleptone of the Kleptones – fresh from rocking Bootie in San Francisco (and knocking heads with the Vice Chairman of EMI – boo! hiss!)

Jeb of £50 Note retuning especially from the US this time doing a longer live/DJ set!

and your veritable host!

As you might have guessed it’ll be an Xmas event with a difference – just loads of good mashup malarky and eclectic mix of music like you hear on them darned poddycasts, so you can Xscape the cheesy Xmas tunes (or maybe hear them evilly buggered!).

Or we might go for non-stop Wizzard on a ever-increasing high pitched Whitney loop, we’ve not decided… Whatever it’ll be fun! And we have a late license (being a private members club it can go on til 3am) so Xmess cheer can go on WAY past closing time…

As before it’s at the Arts Theatre Club, 50 Frith Street, Soho London, and it’s free but guestlist only, so contact or comment here with your full name if you’re thinking of coming (+1s or even +10s like last time are ok )

To see pics of the previous mayhem of the first Radio Clash night, go here – loadsa cute bears btw…(hint hint)

Flyer to follow!
