Happy Scroogemas! And A Bah Humbug New Year!

christmas-dog-pug-santa-hat-1

About to head off to the wilds of Surbiton to see John, probably be online in one way or t’other but y’all have a Happy Scroogemas and Bah Humbug New Year! Happy HanuKwanzaWinterDrinkymas!

So to celebrate my commiserations of the season, here is my Bah Humbug exclusive compilation I gave out to people who came to the 2nd Radio Clash night in 2005 (also called Bah Humbug!) – was that 4 years ago? Wow. I’m uploading this because I met up with Kirk last night and he said he still listens to it every Xmas while wrapping presents, so it definitely gets the Coverley Classic ™.

Also reuploaded the Bah Humbug mix also from 2005, you’ll get a bit of deja vu from this but it’s an expanded version of this compilation – but in lower quality to get the filesize…and it’s mixed!

You can get a zip file of the compilation here – enjoy! Or don’t, grinches!

dark mix #1: dark electro disco noir

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

‘Dark electro / Disco noir’ is what I call a certain type of music referencing or sampling certain horror movie soundtracks from Goblin to John Carpenter that’s popped up recently in certain electro / electro house quarters, and it’s a music that I can connect to for several reasons, it’s dark and broody and seems to fit the state of the nation at the moment (and I also love the music of those 70s and 80s horror movies).

It seems like a lot of new bands from the French (Zombie Zombie, NOTe Found, daRoc, Justice, Maesthelvin, Mustard Pimp) to the British (Padded Cell, Emperor Machine, Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Sisters of Transistors) and even further outposts (Rico Tubbs, Tsk Tsk, Presets, Supermayer) have a common basis to me, so this is also a manifesto of sorts linking these bands together with older and less obvious inspirations (or just my guilty pleasures!) such as Fad Gadget, David Shrigley, Meat Beat Manifesto and Peter Gabriel.

So although not a ‘Halloween’ mix I’ve mixed together these horror-inspired tracks with some of the original tracks that I think inspired them, and thrown in some horror movie samples (can you spot where they are from?) as a nod to Halloween…and this is the first in a series. It’s also the first mix I’ve done in Ableton.

Thanks go out to several blogs that have helped inspire this in posting various tracks, and are blogs I regularly read also:

I’m DJing at Eclectic Kettle – March 10th in Bristol

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Eclectic Kettle

As the email from them succinctly puts it:

1 – it’s free to get in.
2 – if you get there early enough you’ll get a free CD of great tunes that you might’ve heard on previous WoBcasts.
3 – there will be some great music played by Bloodsworth of Babyhead and DJ No No (aka Instamatic, aka tbc from Radio Clash) <<< me!.
4 – it starts at 9pm and goes on til 2am.
5 – it’s on Saturday March 10th.

It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of the kind of tunes I’ve been playtesting at the Parkade in SL (but this is Real Life!), classic fun tunes, ska, reggae, new wave, 70′s pop, disco, 80′s, and modern electrohouse and mashups..ones people have forgotten, the eclectic, the unusual, the should-be-loved. the classic and the new. Might even play the odd one of mine…and the WOBguys will play a real mixture of fun tunes and mashups, being true to the eclectic name.
