View Video

Heard this via Cerys On 6′s show from Sunday, they’ve been playing this a lot on BBC 6Music but unusually it’s not an old 2011 release, the album’s not released yet apart from this single. I thought on first listen this was a mashup, it sounds closer to Jamie XX’s post-remix work on Gil Scott-Heron rather than anything that comes out of studios nowadays. Production is by Damon Albarn and Richard Russell, and it goes a little way of reclaiming Damon’s career post that partly laughable heynonnynony of Dr Dee (for the record I don’t hate all the LP, might play some of it on the podcast, but some of it really doesn’t work especially packaged as a solo LP). Anyway the LP also titled ‘Bravest Man In The Universe’ is out early June.

Except rather than a cool 4×4 UK bass (yes that’s what they called it, 4×4 rather than 2-step, silly term) mashup, Zig & Zag got in on the mix.

Must have been doing something right as APC posted it back in the day, but now I can confess it was I, L’Eclair. Although anyone with half a brain probly worked it out, given that it sounded like DJNoNo Goes Neon Hoxton Rave.

Nice psychedelic Chilean grooves from Niño Silvestre’s ‘Canciones para ver en la oscuridad’ in the vein to my mind of Os Mutantes or a psychedelic Nouvelle Vague, produced, mixed and recorded by our very own Jimmi Jammes. He’s done a brilliant job – and being able to support the artists direct via bandcamp is always a plus.

I liked the last track especially so I bought it and it might pop up on Radio Clash because I’m obsessed by it – ‘Herida Abierta’, which Google Translate tells me is ‘Open Wound’?

Now to have a lazy sunny warm afternoon to go with it…

* I think. That’s what Google Translate says…my Spanish is sadly non-existent, let alone any Chilean dialects!

View Video

I’m a sucker for space footage, as anyone whose seen the Videotones mashup videos I did will attest! And this is amazing, it’s footage of what happened to the boosters used to propel the Shuttle up to orbit, including launch and splashdown – I didn’t know they re-used the rockets. And for once you’ll want to leave the YouTube annotations on, because rather than spamming you with useless unrelated stuff this has comments from someone who knows their stuff (NASA?) and is fascinating. (via Simon Whalley)

Make sure you listen to the sound on it’s own (the spooky groaning sounds in orbit are well worth it) but may I suggest this music from Daniel Wang – Berlin Sunrise (Discjokke remix) as an alternative soundtrack? I just happened to have it on when I was watching and it fitted perfectly – modern space disco at it’s best.

He’s been working with DJ Food and I love the psychedelic vibe – very chillwave/anti-folk but also pushing all those psych-rock/70′s buttons – maybe even slightly *gasp* prog in places but I won’t hold that against him

Here’s a very trippy but good video for Change, love how it goes all Doctor Who in the middle (those old enough to remember the 70′s Doctor Who intro will know what I mean!). I also played one of the more ambient album tracks in the latest podcast, it fitted right in with the chilled out feel.

View Video

“Effortlessly French” – how can you be ‘effortlessly French’? It’s not that hard to stay a nationality after all…And why are you never ‘effortlessly Belgian’? but the electronic version of Railways and Moules-Frites are these two tunes, the first from Belgian electronic pioneer Jacques Sirol.

The second is Rene Costy – he’s been sampled by J-Dilla (it might be easier to list what hasn’t been sampled by him!) and Pretty Lights.

Both these were created as library music in the 1970s – refuge for misfit electronics boffs and those playing outside of their genres (funk for instance), or like Delia Derbyshire did as an on-the-side secret paid gig. I love the continental grooves on these – on first listen I thought these were French, although being on the French side of Belgium that’s not that far.

Googling there have been some who have ‘flipped’ these for beats (not very well I may add) but surprised more don’t follow the J-Dilla and Dangermouse approach of mining old library records – for starters it’d be heck of a lot easier to clear.

And some amazing record covers – wish I had a copy of this album, unlike some of Jacques Siroul’s work it’s not on iTunes, grr:

So now you can say at parties ‘I’m really getting into Belgian early electronica’ and back up that statement. They might still think you’re a fucking hipster, though.
