…these two videos have to be the most (un?)intentionally funny live performances they ever did, in a history of idiosyncratic live performances (remember this is the band that insisted on going onto Top of the Pops to perform the biggest selling 12″ of all time, live, and played so badly and out of tune that the track then did another first – it went DOWN the charts after a TV appearance!).

Talking of that infamous track – Blue Monday – this seems to be a live Radio 1 telethon from the mid 80’s where Barney seems to be having a few problems…(contains swearing and gratuitous shorts)

And of a similar (lack of) quality is this telling clip of a lonely Hooky on Other Side of Midnight (hey I used to watch that!) who looks rather like the rest of the band have run off and left him to it all alone and embarassed: (contains Tony Wilson and Paul Morley reference)

I just love the bemused slow clap at the end, and the frantic shots of the director trying to make a Mac and a few racks of gear interesting…

Ahh the heady heady days of the 1980’s…

And another podcast slips out – what’s gotten into me?

To honour 10 years in the Old Smoke I’ve a two-part podcast for you about London – first one is full of those songs about moving to the Emeraldine city, and visiting Buckingham Palais and going down on Alice, doing the Lambeth Stalk and having a rather (too much of a?) good time, down at the Old Bull and Bush Ye Olde Weatherspoons.

Nah actually we take the sideroutes that only the locals know and the London tunes Nobody Sings (not only a reference to this great documentary, but also a great blog I owe a lot to for these shows, as well as the Wikipedia entry for London songs, and James O’Malley aka @Psythor and his London Musical Map) – and take a journey to the lesser known musical Metropolis. Yes that means no flipping Waterloo Sunset, sorry

No umbrellas, bedknobs, broomsticks or psychotic nannies or chimney sweeps needed…(66Mb, 85Mins)

P.S. Forgot to say the Peter Sellers is for my dad…he loves that track

And what does this mean? Nestle SA owns the copyright on anyone eating a chocolate bar on YouTube? There’s an evil megacorp spot just waiting to be filled when EMI dies, Nestle do you want to fill that hole (just like your chocolate doesnt?)

Anyway this is beside the point; despite trying to ’spike’ the news with a fairly poor ‘well we did anyway a while back but have no proof’ PR flop like trying to ban this video, destroying Indonesian (or any) rainforest for a chocolate bar is not on – you can complain/find out more at Greenpeace’s excellent – and far more infringing, Killer indeed – site.

Oh and Nestle – keep on like this…hopefully you’ll go the way of EMI and take your foul chocolate with you…

He’s right, it’s not parody, not ironic, not nasty, it’s with love – it makes you smile and never out stays it’s welcome.

I almost DJ’d the Trolololo song on Thursday…I wish I had now. I wasn’t sure how many people knew it – looks like this is world-wide! DJNoNo made this rather silly Trololo mashup for it, a combination of Aphrodite’s (NOT AGAIN!) Wooble and The Bee remix and Trololo – it’s silly, messy, and doesn’t probably work entirely but here, have it and I hope it raises a smile (that’s not hard with Trololo). This will probably not be posted elsewhere so let’s keep it a secret between you and I, eh? Probably for the best, not sure the world is ready for such madness…

And someone has even done an Trololo Audiosurf video already and it even works with that…

Here’s a message from the man himself:

And am planning to meet up with A&D beforehand too. It’s interesting cos last time they were here I asked them if there would ever be a Bootie London – and got a coy response…and now they indeed return with a special Bootie London.

And it looks like most, if not all of the UK Mashuperati will be there…

Yes! A cutup/mashup related post! At last!

I’m really digging I Cut People atm – learnt of them via Skip to the End podcast (which learned of them via Mr Fab’s wonderful Music for Maniacs blog) and it’s a cross between Wayne Butane and Cassetteboy in my mind, with probably a little Negativland thrown in for good measure – all of which I love and have played on the podcast. So expect Parker Tapes style cutup merriment, mediabusting style attacks on culture, Hollywood and BUYBUYBUY attitude (as per the video above which is by I Cut People, the audio is by GITAR (i cut people and ellipse elkshow)) and various other audio anarchy.

Looks like I Cut People does a cutup album every year since 2005 – wow – all of which you can download for free or buy – and my favourites are mostly from the more recent albums such as March of the Monster Squads (purporting to be a film trailer for evil zombie Penguins meets Star Wars and phoney plastic Christian Slater LOL), Kung Fu What Would Jesus Do?, A Few Good Product Placements (YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE BACON!) and Merry Chris…Crisis which certainly is up there for Xmas-cutup merriment.

This video for GITAR’s ‘dead u r’ is not really worksafe nor for the squeamish but is very funny and good.

Yup Radio Clash has made it onto Google Books via Spin, July 2005 I’m already sort of on there (2 pages) of my ‘Make a Mashup’ chapter of Podcasting Hacks.
Yay! Go me! The 15 minutes was so fleeting but at least it’s documented online…just call me “Tim” LOL.

You might have noticed the little Electronic Frontier Foundation and Open Rights Group banners that have been at the bottom right of this blog for years…why do I support them? Well for one, although I’m not in the States I support the EFF because currently they are fighting for you and I to be able to do video mashups and post them legally to sites like YouTube without getting those infantile (as Lessig pointed out in my last post they do treat you like you’re in school, the Myspace ‘copyright quiz’ is even more offensive) DMCAs.

Also I support them because they are fighting the likes of Apple and co. who are creating anti-competitive closed systems and thus being usually bad for the consumer (AppleVangelists and ‘Geniuses’ should read their rather damning revelation of the AppStore legals that Apple doesn’t want you to see – All Your Appz Belong To Uzz indeed) and fighting DMCA and ACTA which is probably behind the evil Digital Economy Bill, and fighting for free speech and net neutrality online.

Open Rights Group does a similar job but with a UK/European stance – there are things EFF can’t/won’t touch that are specifically UK (the aforementioned DEBill for example, ORG has been campaigning about that). It’s a double handed attack, because what may go down in the US could pop up here, and vice versa. They also cover CCTV and ID card and other security worries where technology is possibly going to infringe on civil liberties and privacy – things that are more specific to the UK.

Pirate Party is also getting bigger here in the UK, I’m a member there too, although not been as involved as I’d like.

So whether you’re a mashup DJ, video remixer, developer, interactive artist, musician, web designer or just concerned about security and the (mis)use of technology and laws around it, I strongly recommend punting some money and support over to EFF and ORG, amongst many others…because they really are fighting for the digital freedoms you currently enjoy.

/soapbox out.
